OOTD: comfy cozy

17 Oct

Sometimes I have those days where all I want to do is stay in my pjs. All. Day. Long. Even though I love clothes and putting together new outfits is one of my favorite things to do, there are still times where I just want to be comfy and cozy. Luckily, I have a wonderful job that allows me to wear great fashion, express my own style, and permits cute, comfy outfits like this one!

A simple oversized sweat shirt, leopard scarf, leggings, and knee high boots kept me both comfortable and stylish for a day at work.

OOTD: stripes to the max(i)

5 Oct

I know I’ve been absent lately from the blogging world *sigh*. I’ve just been so busy and working on some other fun, fashion-y projects. From now on, though, I’m going to try and blog a little more often. Pinky promise!

Today’s post is all about an outfit I wore to work this afternoon. I love this maxi skirt! The fact that it’s long but short at the same time is fun with just a touch of sexy. Sorry the pictures aren’t the best quality. The lighting inside my house is pretty crappy at night!

How To Find That Perfect Pair of Jeans

16 Aug

perfectpairofjeans

Every girl wants to find that perfect pair of jeans. A pair of jeans that hugs her curves in all the right places, flatters, fits perfectly, goes with everything, and is comfortable. Unfortunately, many women think that it would be easier to find the Holy Grail than those coveted jeans. I hear it all the time: “I’m made funny”, “My thighs are too big for jeans”, “Jeans make my butt look saggy”, “All jeans highlight my love handles”, etc. etc. Even more unfortunate is that women think that their jean problem is caused by them or their bodies. Nothing could be further from the truth!

If you don’t take anything else away from this how-to, please remember that there is nothing wrong with your body. If the jeans don’t fit, it is the jeans fault not your bodies.

Understanding a few basic terms from common jean lingo can really help you better understand what type of jean is right for your body. Something first to consider is the fit. Now, contrary to popular belief, the fit of the jean has nothing to do with leg openings (i.e. bootcut, flare, etc.). Instead, fit is how a jean will fit from the hip through the thigh and down through the knee. Some words that commonly describe fit are: curvy, slim, relaxed, and straight (this will vary from retailer to retailer). It is important understand that each fit is going to be different. You might be a 5 in one fit but a size 7 in another. So trying each pair on is crucial. How do you find which fit is best for you? TRY THEM ON! Never ever buy jeans without trying them on.If you find a fit you love ask the sales associate if that same fit comes in multiple colors. Retailers often offer numerous washes in the same fit which makes jean shopping so much easier! Another mantra I hear over and over is “I’m a curvy girl! I can’t wear slim fit jeans!” Yes! Yes you can! As a matter of fact, slim fit jeans can sometimes be much more flattering than a more relaxed fit! The name of a fit should not discourage you from trying them on!

I’ve preached this before in my “How to Manage Muffin Top” post but this could seriously be the most important aspect of jean shopping so it is worth mentioning again: pay attention to the rise. The rise of a jean refers to the length of the pant from the crotch to the top of the waistband in the front and the back. Finding the right rise for your body is crucial to finding a comfortable and flattering pair of jeans. Most retails will have several different rises from low rise all the way to high-waisted varieties. Trying on several rises is so important and remember when the rise changes there is a good possibility that the size you will need will change too. Consequently, don’t be afraid to try take several different sizes with you to the fitting room. Getting the perfect rise can really be the difference between a jean that causes severe muffin top or is otherwise unflattering and a super slimming, “I want to wear you everyday” jean.

midrise

h&m

Another thing wise and informed jean shoppers do is check the labels. See how much cotton, spandex, and other fabrics are in the jeans. Obviously jeans with a high percentage spandex or elastic are going to have a lot of stretch which makes them very forgiving and curve-hugging. Jeans with a lot of cotton are often very soft and good quality but slightly less forgiving because of their lack of stretch. A 98% cotton 2% spandex blend is a good medium however you must find what is most comfortable  for you.

Something else to consider is the wash of the jeans. Wash refers to the color and amount of distressing/lack of distressing on the jeans. There are TONS of washes to choose from: dark wash, light wash, medium wash, and endless variances. Not to mention blasting, baking, whiskering, and other ways of detailing jeans. All of these can really impact how the jeans look on; even if the fit is perfect, these details can make or break how slimming and how the jean looks on. Generally, dark washes are the most flattering however this does not mean that trendier, lighter wash jeans are always a no-no. Instead of shying away from lighter washes completely, pay attention to where the lightest area of the jean is. These lightest areas are practically a spotlight. Consequently, if your thighs are not your favorite body part, avoid any wash that goes lighter at this area.

jegging

Rag & Bone Boyfriend – Moss with Holes and Denim Flex Dark Wash Jegging

Believe it or not, the leg opening on a jean really is all about personal preference and has little to do with the overall fit. Whether you purchase a bootcut, flare, straight leg, skinny, or boyfriend jean is really all up to you. Though there are some fits that flatter certain body types more than others, choosing the best leg opening is all about what you prefer.

When jean shopping you really need to be prepared to just buckle down, hit the fitting room, and try on numerous options. Finding the perfect apartment, car, or even boyfriend can take a lot of work and finding the perfect pair of jeans is no different! Making sure you go to a denim retailer with numerous options and knowledgeable sales associates is also key. They are experts on their product and most likely know what will fit your body better than even you do! So, listen to them and be willing to try on their suggestions. It never hurt to try and may ultimately be the difference between you leaving the store frustrated or exiting in denim bliss! Don’t forget that having a good tailor can also really increase your chances of finding denim perfection. If you find the perfect fit but they are just a tad long or have some other minor problem, it could be just a quick, inexpensive fix for a tailor and the end result will be your custom, fits-like-a-glove jean that you will wear forever.

I hope these tips have not only encouraged you to go try on some jeans but also help you find that perfect pair! Any questions about jeans, buying jeans, fit, or jean lingo? Just ask!

5 Ways to Freshen up Your Summer Wardrobe Using Pieces Already in Your Closet

23 Jul

Are you in that summer rut? Yes you. You know who you are. Shorts, t-shirt, flip flops. Every. Single. Day. Even if that does not exactly describe your style, do you find yourself reaching for the same-ole same ole day in and day out? If so, this post is for you.

All of us occasionally struggle with making the tried and true pieces in our closet look fresh day after day. Good news! There are some simple things that you can do to make even your most well-loved favorites feel current. And the best part is you can do it while spending little or no money.

1) You know that chambray shirt that you love so much? How about that white oxford shirt? Or, for that matter, your favorite, lightweight sweater? Instead of simply pairing these with your usual shorts or skinnies, try popping them over your favorite sundress.

Even if you have worn the same ole dress 100 times this summer, adding a chambray shirt, sweater, or really any kind of blouse over top will trick your friends and/or co-workers into thinking that you have bought a completely new dress! Who knew they would be that easy to fool.

2) Some people (including my best friend) will grimace at this next suggestions: ditch those old flip flops for a more stylish shoe. I know, I know, summer is flip-flop season however the beach is really the most appropriate place for this warm-weather favorite. Though easy and arguably comfortable, flip flops should not enter into the workplace. The fact is trading in your flip flops for an equally comfortable and abundantly cuter option with add instant polish to your outfit.

Instead of grabbing your rubbery flops, give one of these options a try.

I know just the name “Crocs” brings to mind so many negative connotations, but put those thoughts aside and check out these super cute, ultra comfy options from the famed ugly, rubber shoe maker. They have really upped their game! Buy them here at crocs.com

Not on the Crocs bandwagon just yet? That is NO excuse to dig out those dirty flip flops! Here are some more comfortable options!

Keds are not just for your granny anymore! Helloooo even Taylor Swift is wearing them! Buy them on Keds.com.

Sandals are not a no-no. Just make them fabulous pairs like these and you are good to go!

These pedicure-ready sandal options are available at Macy’s and are a sure way to get you out of your flip flop frump (say that five times fast!).

3) Though some people love shorts and relish every chance to wear them, others simply don’t. Whether you are a shorts lover and occasionally need to try something different or you shy away from baring all when it comes to your legs, this tip is for you.

Grab those skinny jeans and just cuff them. Why you may ask. Well, cuffing them both makes them look new and different while simultaneously showing an alluring flash of ankle. Plus, it gives you the chance to show off a great pair of shoes (No flip flops allowed!).

4) This is an obvious tip, but a good one: mix and match. That being said, it is easier for some than others. Oftentimes, we get in the habit of pairing a certain pair of pants with a certain top with the same accessories – time after time after time. Needless to say, this gets old – quick.  A good way to change it up is to pre-plan your outfits. Take a few minutes one day and play dress up (who doesn’t love that!). Pair things with those same ole pants that you wouldn’t have thought about before; layer up that go-to shirt in unexpected ways. You might be pleasantly surprised with what you come up with! Now for some inspiration!

Pair that navy blazer (that you you always wear with the same pants over and over and over) with something new and fun!

If you are utterly beaten down with the “I have nothing to wear” dilemma, hit up Pintrest for outfit ideas or simply the good, old fashioned Google machine! There are so many resources out there to help you defeat that wardrobe crisis  monster!

5) Another good, and yes obvious, tip is to use your accessories. Changing up or adding accessories can really make or break an outfit. As well as make even an old outfit seem totally new. Statement necklaces, bangle stacks, cocktail rings, unexpected shoes, and eye-catching bags can all breathe life into your wardrobe. Here are a few of my favorite accessories as of late.

Our One Year Wedding Anniversary!

18 Jul

Last week, Ike and I celebrated our one year wedding anniversary! It is so cliche to say that it doesn’t seem possible that it has been a year, but the cliche totally applies here! As does the age old saying “time flies when you are having fun!” I am so very blessed to be married to my best friend.

Here are a few photos from our big day courtesy of Kasey Kesner Photography!

For our anniversary, Ike planned a wonderful surprise date night! He would not tell me where we were going! That day, before the big surprise, we hit up some local flea markets (which is a weekend routine for us! We LOVE searching through junk looking for treasures!) and grabbed a sushi lunch. That evening he revealed to me that he had made reservations for dinner at  at the Martha Washington Inn Restaurant! I had never been, but had always want to! The Martha Washington Inn was originally built in 1832 and served as an all girls college, then a hospital for soldiers during the civil war, and now as a hotel, restaurant, and spa.

Being the sweetie he is, Ike bought me an entire outfit to wear to dinner! He even got my sizes right and, if I dare say, I couldn’t have picked out a cuter outfit myself!

We had such an incredible time! The food, service, and atmosphere was amazing. The inside of the hotel is as stunning and history-filled, as the outside. I cannot wait to go back again! I’m hoping this becomes an anniversary tradition. 🙂

Slithering Into a Store Near You

14 Jul

From Lucky magazine to local department stores, I have been noticing a common thread: snakeskin. Though snakeskin can potentially conjure up many negative and unpleasantly tacky images, the snakeskin that is currently trending is appearing as tasteful touches that are incredibly chic. Snakeskin accessories are everywhere and add interesting texture and pattern to any outfit.

OOTD: Falling for Floral

6 Jun

If it wasn’t obvious before, it should be obvious by now that I love prints – especially floral. Today I went for floral yet again but, this time, it was in the form of these awesome pants. These pants are possibly some of the most comfortable I’ve ever worn; in fact, I really just love all Bullhead pants. They always have the perfect amount of stretch and I love the mid rise of this particular pair. I just can’t help but be super happy anytime I wear these!

OOTD: Wide Leg Pants

29 May

One of my favorite things is when stylish, fashionable clothes are also exceptionally comfortable and that is what I have found with these pants! They are so light, loose and oh so comfy. Today I’m wearing them to work pared with a yellow, flowy button down that I just tied at the waist (right now I’m really into tying shirts instead of tucking them in). Since the pants are such a statement, I kept my accessories really simple by wearing just a pair of earrings and wedges. Hope you like!

OOTD: $9.00 Skirt

26 Apr

Who doesn’t love a bargain? Recently, my husband, two of our best friends, and I went on a little day trip and stopped in at the Tanger Outlet mall. Believe it or not, I actually found this skirt at the Aeropostale outlet! I was really suprised because I usually do not find much there that I like but I did love this skirt and I loved the price even more! $9.00!! Here is the outfit that I’m wearing to work today and it incorporates my $9.00 skirt! It is still a little chilly here for spring, so I decided to balance out the shortness of the skirt with a sweater (plus stay warm!).
